Check Your Assumptions

A thought on From Hebrews to Negroes

… and that’s all I’m going to say about that.

Now on to more important stuff… just because somebody researched and wrote a book or even produced a YouTube video about the history of the black Israelites doesn’t mean they are an expert on the subject.

Though we should appreciate different forms of original work, we must also question, critique, and debate it BEFORE letting it loose into the public domain.

Thinking Critically

If we want to break out of this crazy, insane cycle of misinformation and disinformation, we have got to start thinking critically – something that is, unfortunately, being removed from our K-12 schools.

I’m really concerned for the future generation. Everybody just recklessly quotes information like it’s been reviewed by experts. And when I say “experts,” I mean people who have devoted their lives to studying a particular field, such as African and/or Jewish Studies.

True experts pick apart theories and ideas from a bunch of different sources. They question the writers on their intent and motivation behind their work and inquire if they have given thought to other potential ideas.

This is called “checking your assumptions.”

We have tons of information available through social media and streaming sources – which can be overwhelming. By the way, do people still live in the “stacks” and read books?

Let’s get back to that!

So, instead of letting all this misinformation control and divide us, let’s start thinking more critically about the sources we’re consuming. And don’t forget to check those assumptions.

Excellent, I often have conversations about the lack of critical thinking in our country!
