Critical thinking analyzes an issue from multiple perspectives, identifies underlying assumptions, and draws reasoned conclusions. It is a skill set that can be learned and honed through practice.
To think critically, leaders need to learn four key skills: how to ask good questions, how to listen actively, how to imagine different scenarios, and how to make reasoned decisions. Let’s take a closer look at each of these skills.
Asking Good Questions
Asking good questions is the first step in the critical thinking process. Questions should be open-ended and focused on uncovering underlying assumptions. For example, rather than asking, “What went wrong?” after a negative event, try asking, “What could we have done differently?” This question assumes that there is always room for improvement and forces you to think about what could have been done differently.
Active Listening
Listening is more than just hearing words; it’s about understanding their meaning. When actively listening, you pay attention not only to the words being said but also to the emotions and experiences being communicated. This involves both listening with your ears and listening with your eyes. For example, you might notice that someone who is nervous about speaking up in a meeting is biting their lip or fidgeting in their chair. These nonverbal cues indicate that this person needs help to feel comfortable sharing their ideas.
Imagining Different Scenarios
Effective leaders need to be able to see things from multiple perspectives and imagine different scenarios. This involves thinking creatively and looking at issues from different angles. For example, if you are trying to increase sales at your company or reduce poverty in your community, you might want to consider ways to reach new customers or stakeholders or develop new marketing or donor campaigns. It’s also important to think about potential risks and challenges that could arise from implementing these changes. By imagining different scenarios, you can make better-informed decisions about which course of action to take.
Making Reasoned Decisions
The final step in the critical thinking process is making reasoned decisions. This involves weighing the pros and cons of each option and choosing the course of action that is most likely to lead to success. For example, if you are considering whether or not to launch a new product or program, you might want to consider factors such as market demand, production costs, competitive landscape, and ethical concerns. Once you have gathered all of this information, you can decide whether launching the product or program is in your best interests.
In sum, global critical thinking skills are essential for aspiring global leaders who want to be successful in today’s rapidly changing world. By learning to ask good questions, listen actively, imagine different scenarios, and make reasoned decisions, leaders can develop the critical thinking skills they need to navigate complex challenges and make informed decisions.
